The Chapel HIll Lady Cougars jumped out early on visiting Haralson County Friday night, defeating their region counterpart 52-34. The CHHS boys picked up their first win of the season with a 73-40 victory.

The Lady Cougars went up 11-6 after the first quarter and led 23-13 at the half. A 19-10 third quarter gave the Lady Panthers a 42-33 lead.

“We did a good job tonight opening with pressure and limiting their second chance opportunities,” said Chapel Hill coach Scott Long. “We made some adjustments after the half to stop some of the things they were doing on defense and we were able to shoot the ball better.”

Ashley Chestnut led the Lady Panthers with 21 points.

“She was my floor general as always and had a good night offensively as well as defensively,” Long said. “She distributed the ball well and created turnovers.”

Kaneisha Mixon followed Chestnut with 14 points. Erica Jones added 11.

In the boys game, CHHS went up 18-13 in the first quarter and led 42-23 at the half. They were up 53-23 after the third.

“We let the defense work for us tonight,” said Cougar coach Lee Wilson. “It means a lot to get this first win. Hopefully now we can relax and it will take the pressure off and build confidence.”

Jaymarius Turner led Chapel Hill with 19 points. Aries Phoenix and Rico Flemister followed with 12 each. Ishmael Davis added nine.

Chapel Hill will be back in action today when they travel to Central-Carroll. Girls will play at 6 p.m. and boys will follow at 7:30 p.m.
