The University of West Georgia men’s basketball team will try to bounce back from Thursday night’s road loss in Memphis when it goes up against the top scorer and rebounder in the Gulf South Conference today in Cleveland, Miss.

The Wolves close out their two-game GSC road swing with a date against Delta State and Terry Leake, who is averaging a league-best 18.9 points and 9.6 rebounds per game this season.

The 6-foot-5 senior forward leads a Statesmen squad that is just 5-9 overall and 1-5 in league play, but one that owns a signature win in the past week — a 59-53 road stunner of ninth-ranked Alabama-Huntsville on Jan. 12.

DSU lost a heartbreaker at the buzzer on Thursday night, falling to West Alabama in a 62-60 overtime affair when the Tigers drilled an 18-footer at the horn in OT.

The Wolves (7-7, 4-2 GSC) fell into a three-way tie for second place in the GSC standings with North Alabama and Christian Brothers following their 64-54 road loss at CBU on Thursday night. All three teams are currently on the tail of league front-runner, UAH (13-2, 6-1).

Today’s tip time is set for 5 p.m. at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

UWG women: The Wolves (10-4, 4-2) take their three-game winning streak into today’s 3 p.m. tilt with the Lady Statesmen (9-5, 4-2), who routed West Alabama on Thursday evening, 58-32.

DSU held the Tigers to just 12 field goals on the night, including four in UWA’s 11-point first half. Seneca Walton enjoyed a monster night in the post for the Lady Statesmen, scoring 15 points with 23 rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals.

The 6-foot-1 sophomore center leads four DSU players in double-figures offensively on the season at 14.6 points per game to go along with a team-high 8.5 rebounds per contest.

West Georgia earned a 59-56 win at Christian Brothers on Thursday evening, getting a double-double from Brittany Johnson with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while JaDechia Hill dropped in a team-high 15 points with five boards. Taylor Turgeon also reached double figures with 12 points, going 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.
