The Trojans (11-6, 3-4 Region 5-AAAA) held the Grangers (13-4, 4-2) without a point from the start of the fourth quarter to the 3:31 mark when LaGrange knocked down a pair of free throws. But Carrollton was able to build on its 40-32 lead going into the final eight minutes behind the defensive muscle, a welcome sight to Trojan coach Tim Criswell.
“I mean, just a great win for us. A great team effort. We had a couple guys that really just had outstanding games. Javarious Jackson only scored six points, but he probably played his best floor game of the season. He just took care of the pressure, handled the ball and made good decisions all night long. Then Will Hesterlee had his best offensive game, scoring 12 points for us. I think he had to have nine or 10 rebounds off the bench and hit two big 3s. Then I felt like Malik Sheppard did just an outstanding job on defense. Got several rebounds over what he’s been getting. Those three I’m calling out, but there was a lot of guys doing a lot of good things,” Criswell said. “To go on the road and beat a team of that caliber, it was a huge win for us.”
Carrollton shot 13-of-24 from the floor in the first half to get out to a 28-15 halftime lead and then the Grangers went ice cold late, connecting on a 1-of-15 clip from the field in the fourth quarter.
Marcus Henderson led a balanced Trojan offensive attack with 13 points, while Hesterlee added 12 points and Byron McCall and Montae Glenn both posted eight points.
Carrollton returns to action on Friday when it plays host to Columbus at 7:30 p.m.
LaGrange girls 63, Carrollton 56: The Lady Trojans (13-5, 4-3 Region 5-AAAA) couldn’t overcome LaGrange’s fourth quarter free-throw shooting, dropping Tuesday night’s road contest.
The game was tied at 37-all entering the fourth quarter, but the Lady Grangers shot 18-of-19 from the free-throw line in the final eight minutes and Carrollton didn’t have enough to make the comeback.
Tasmine Boykin led Carrollton with 23 points, while Kenyata Hendrix scored 12.
The Lady Trojans will host Columbus on Friday at 6 p.m.

Oak Mountain Academy boys 65, Dawson Street 63: The Warriors (17-2, 6-0) clinched the top seed for the region tournament on Tuesday night, and did so in dramatic fashion against their region rival.
After Dawson Street committed a turnover with six seconds left in a tied ball game, OMA coach Lenny Williams called a timeout and drew up a final play. On the in-bounds, Colton Pollard found Wade Mason on a lob pass, setting up the sophomore forward’s game-winning bucket and capping off a comeback from six points down with 2:30 to go in the game.
James Hughes led OMA with 17 points, including five 3-pointers, while Blake Mason had 15 points and eight assists, Pollard added 14 points and Wade Mason posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
OMA girls 47, Dawson Street 41: The Lady Warriors (17-2, 6-0) got a 21-point effort from Jessi Fuller, while Meredith Sammon finished with 14 points.
Central girls 59, Douglass 54: The Lady Lions (16-4, 9-0 Region 4-AAA) picked up the region road win behind an 18-point effort from Wesli Simmons, while Sherae Bonner posted 17 points.
Carrollton Junior High boys 63, Heard County 29: Jordan Hunter led the Trojans with 15 points.
