The Lady Warriors (23-4) collected a 49-45 victory over the Lady Wildcats despite a 39-point effort from Gray, clinching the No. 1 seed for the upcoming GISA Class A state playoffs, which begin on Feb. 20.
On the flipside, Dawson Street did its best effort to stop Lady Warrior senior guard Jessi Fuller — who scored a game-high 20 points in Thursday night’s 47-7 semifinal win — by putting a box-and-one on her. But OMA isn’t a one-player team, as Meredith Sammon stepped up with 14 points and Anna Lane Tinsley added 11 to lead the way. Fuller still scored in double figures with 10 points for the well-balanced offensive attack.
“With Dawson Street playing the box-and-one on Jessi, Meredith Sammon and Anna Lane stepped up big for us [Friday],” OMA coach Terrell Barkley said. “It was a full team effort [Friday].”
Dawson Street boys 47, Oak Mountain 29: The Warriors (21-6) endured an ice-cold shooting night and fell to their region rivals in the finals of the Region 4-A Tournament on Friday, dropping to the No. 2 seed for the GISA Class A state playoffs.
“We scored so many [Thursday], then we just couldn’t put the ball in the basket [Friday], and we had great shots. Just great shots. We looked a step slower. And when you’re playing against teams that are athletic, that just can’t happen,” Oak Mountain coach Lenny Williams said.
Wade Mason led the Warriors with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Kelton Hunt added seven points and 10 boards.
Williams said it proved to be a frustrating night all around, but the OMA coach tipped his hat to the Wildcats for earning the win and region crown.
“It was just a situation where the better team won [Friday]. They beat us on the offensive glass, they beat us in transition. It’s very hard beating a team three times in one season, as we all know. They got our number [Friday],” Williams said.
OMA now turns its focus to the state playoffs, where it will face a south Georgia team in the opening round on Thursday, Feb. 21.
