The Villa Rica High School boys’ basketball team kept its season alive on Saturday and is now just one win away from securing a Class AAAAA state playoff berth.

The Wildcats (16-10) won a 56-42 road decision over Rome in the opening game of the Region 5-AAAAA Tournament to move on to Wednesday’s quarterfinal round against Lithia Springs.

Josh Lay led VR with 15 points, followed by Xavier Hughes with 14 points.

The Tigers (6-17, 1-7 Region 5-AA) closed out the regular season with a loss in Columbus despite a monster night from senior standout Trevor Shell, who exploded for 44 points and 16 rebounds.
