Alexander traveled to Cobb County Friday evening to take on Kennesaw Mountain in a non-region baseball game. Pitching was the story of the game as the Cougars defeated the Mustangs 3-2.

Nick Wise started the game for AHS and Chandler took the ball for Kennesaw Mountain. Both pitchers battled through three scoreless innings before the Cougars got on the board in the top of the fourth inning.

Leadoff hitter Brian Dansereau was hit by a pitch to opened the fourth inning for Alexander. After being sacrificed to second, Wise singled to left, putting runners on first and third. Austin Cunningham came in to courtesy run for the pitcher. Andrew Smith stepped to the plate and reached on a fielder’s choice but no out was recorded. Dansereau scored on the play. Cunningham advanced to third and Smith moved up to second on the error.

Still with one out, Cody Worthy singled to left, scoring both Cunningham and Smith. CJ Sparnell popped out to short and Jordon Lee grounded out to short to end the inning.

Wise threw a scoreless fifth inning, ending his night. Allowed allowed no runs and three hits, while striking out eight and walking one. The fifth also ended the night for the Mustangs hitter. Chanlder allowed three runs off of two hits. He struck out five and walked none.

Alexander threatened in the sixth against a new pitcher, putting two runners on with no outs. However, they could not capitalize and the game remained at 3-0.

Morris came in for AHS in the bottom of the sixth and threw a shutout inning. However, in the bottom of the seventh he ran into trouble as Kennesaw Mountain nearly completed a comeback, pushing two runs across the plate. Stephen Kloser came in and got out of the jam, throwing the final two-thirds of an inning.

Wise led the Cougars at the plate, going 2-for-3. Hammonds led the Mustangs with two hits.

Lions fall to North Paulding

Lithia Springs fell to North Paulding Friday evening, 8-1. The team struggled on defense, committing nine errors which led to six of the runs.

Garrett Voyles took the hard fought loss on the mound. He threw five innings and allowed four runs, none of which were earned.

Dave Patel started the sixth inning and allowed two earned runs. BJ LaVigne finished the inning.

The Lions scored their lone run in the fifth inning. Patel led off with a hit and was moved over on an Alex Hopkins bunt. He scored on an Isaiah Franks double. Franks led the offense with two hits.

“We have the nucleus to have a good team but have to start producing runs,” said LSHS coach John Fulkerson. “Once we get the bats going we will be a much better ball club.”

Jags lose at Allatoona

New Manchester was no-hit on the road at Allatoona High School Friday in a 10-0 five inning loss.

The Jaguars got a solid three innings from starter Devonte Frost and entered the fourth down 1-0. Frost started the fourth inning but ran into trouble. He walked the first hitter, the second reach on and error, followed by a hit and then another walk. A grandslam then put the game out of reach.

“The kids played probably their best ball through the first three innings,” said NMHS coach Chuck Walker. “The umpire tightened up on us a bit in the fourth inning and the walks and home run took it out on us.”

New Manchester put two runners on base in the fourth and fifth innings but could not get a run across the plate.

“We just can’t close it out but we are still young,” Walker said. “It will get better once we return some key players from injuries.”
