In their final game wearing the black and gold Randazerro Chaney and Victor Wynn led the Golden Knights (18-16) with 17 and 13 points, respectively, while freshman Alyja Hennings added 11.
It was also the final game for Derrick Weeks who along with Chaney and Wynn helped boost the WGTC basketball program to a new level this season.
"That’s the group that laid the foundation for our program,” WGTC coach Niki Okolovitch said. “They led us one step away from the Final 8. I’m going to miss those guys, all three of them are great kids. I look forward to watching them at the next level.”
West Georgia Tech never got into a flow offensively and finished the game shooting just 36 percent from the floor while Caldwell shot just under 50 percent at 47.5 to advance to the NJCAA National Championship Tournament next week.
Caldwell closed the first half on a 7-2 run to build a five-point halftime lead and got it up to eight points early in the second half. The Golden Knights were able to get it down to six points a couple of times, but couldn't maintain the offense.
This was WGTC's second trip to the District 7 tournament where they fell in the semifinals last season, this time around they got one game further.
West Georgia Tech Baseball
The Golden Knights (11-10. 1-3 Region 17) dropped both ends of Saturday's doubleheader against Andrew College, 8-2 and 6-5 in Douglasville.
In the opening game WGTC managed nine hits, but were only able to bring two runs across. Those two runs came in the bottom of the third inning to match Andrew College, but the visitors added another run in the fourth, four in the fifth and one in the seventh to get the win.
The nightcap brought an exciting finish in extra innings as the Golden Knights came back to score a run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game after giving up the lead in the top of the inning, but Andrew College scored a run in the eighth and WGTC didn't have an answer in the home half.
The Golden Knights put up two runs in each the first and second innings to get out to a 4-0 lead. Andrew College picked up a run in the fifth before scoring four in the seventh to take the lead before the Golden Knights forced extras.
Region play will continue for WGTC as they travel to Douglas to face South Georgia College in a single, 3 p.m. game on Tuesday.
UWG Baseball
The seven-game winning streak for the University of West Georgia baseball team was snapped on Saturday as the Wolves dropped both games of the doubleheader at West Alabama, 3-2 and 4-0.
The first game was a 10-inning affair with the Wolves (14-6, 3-2 GSC) getting on the board first thanks to a solo home run from T.J. Eifort to lead off the second inning. West Georgia added another run in the sixth inning before UWA (10-11, 5-0) got two runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extras.
The teams went scoreless through the first two and a half innings before the Tigers got the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th.
In the second game the Wolves managed just 2 hits — one from Dylan Coleman and Galen Smith each — as they were shutout 4-0.
Defense was also a problem in the nightcap as UWG committed a pair of errors that led to three unearned runs for the Tigers.
The Wolves will wrap up the three-game series today at 1 p.m.
