Historical society

The Tallapoosa Historical Society will meet in the Sparrow Chapel on April 20 at 7 p.m. Ethan Brown will be present with his program entitled Tallapoosa Timeline. Members and visitors are welcome. For more information call 770-574-8415 or 770-574-2482.

Book Club

The Tallapoosa lunch bunch book club will meet at 1 p.m. May 4 in the Tallapoosa Library reading room to discuss the book, “The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch.” The group meets the first Tuesday of each month in the library. New members are welcome. For info call Karen at 770-574-3124.

Ballroom Dancing

Grab a partner and join us for Dance Classes on Mondays. Session I begins on May 3 from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. for four weeks at Sewell Mill. The cost of the class is $30 per person per session, and the instructor is Debra Cleckler. Session I will be the Waltz, Fox Trot and Two Step. Session II will begin June 7, and Swing, Cha Cha and the Rumba will be taught. Register at the Bremen Parks & Recreation Department, 770-537-4222.

Buchanan Farmer’s Market

Vendors and shoppers are welcome to the Buchanan Farmer’s Market opening day on Thursday, April 29, from 7 a.m. to noon and every Thursday through the fall. There is a $5 fee for vendors to cover advertising costs. Fresh and locally grown produce will be available, as well as concessions, at the Buchanan Methodist Church parking lot, on the corner of Georgia Highway 120 and U.S. Highway 27. Kindergarten Pre-Registration

2010-2011 Pre-Kindergarten Registration for Haralson County Schools will be held May 3 through 7 from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day. To register in Buchanan, go to Building Blocks Pre-K or call Patty Malone at 770-646-9879 for more information. To register in Tallapoosa, go to Tallapoosa Primary School or call Jennifer Dobbs at 770-574-7444 for more information. To register, you must bring the child’s birth certificate and proof of residency. Please also bring the child’s social security card, ear eye and dental screening form, immunization record, and Medicaid or Peach Care card, if you have them. Children registering for Pre-K must be 4 years old by Sept. 1, 2010.

Museum

The West Georgia Museum of Tallapoosa is accepting pictures of native birds from the public to place on display in the museum. Bring your 8x10 photos of your native winter birds and the museum will frame it and label it for you. For more information, call 770-574-3125.

Tallapoosa Schools Reunion

There will be a reunion of all classes of the Tallapoosa Schools. Anyone attending Tallapoosa School, at any time, is invited to the a big gathering at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, at the Old Tallapoosa High School Building.

Food Banks of America will distribute food every Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 542 Golf Course Road, Tallapoosa. For information call 770-574-9700.

Band Boosters

Ranburne High School Band Boosters will be hosting two fund raisers April 24. The 2010 Miss Spring Pageant will be held at 11 a.m. CST at Ranburne Elementary gym. Haralson County Gifted Association

The Haralson County Gifted Association will be meeting at 6:30 p.m., Monday, April 19, in the Georgia Power Building in Tallapoosa. Anyone with an interest in supporting the gifted children and program in Haralson County is invited to attend. We will be discussing fundraising options, including business or corporate sponsorship, to send our gifted teachers to the National Association of Gifted Children annual convention this November in Atlanta! We will also be accepting nominations for officers for the 2010-11 school year.

American Thread will meet for their get together from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 24, at Jacks in Tallapoosa, Ga.

Bremen Senior Center Play

The Bremen Senior Center members will preform the play “Mama’s House” on May 6, 7 and 8, at 7 p.m. at Sewell Mill. Tickets cost $5 and are available at the Bremen Senior Center.

Flowers on the Square

Flowers on the Square, a day of community service is being held April 24 from 9 a.m. to noon. Everyone is invited to help clean up and beautify the City of Buchanan. Should bring their gloves, tools and a friend. Flowers will be planted in the planters and hanging baskets, and two service projects off the square will be offered to participants. Arrive at 9 a.m. to choose your service site.

Drugs Don’t Work Seminar

Please join us on May 5 for a Drugs Don’t Work Seminar featuring Chuck Wade, President and CEO of The Council on Alcohol and Drugs. Mr. Wade has been the state director of Drugs Don’t Work in Georgia for the past 13 years. Previously, Mr. Wade was a police officer for 15 years, working as an undercover narcotics agent for 11 of those years. Learn about the benefits of and how to become a certified drug-free workplace. Certified drug-free workplaces in Georgia receive a 7.5 percent discount on workers’ comp insurance premiums. The seminar will be at the Haralson County Chamber of Commerce, 70 Murphy Campus Blvd., Waco from 11:30 to 1pm. Lunch is $6 and an RSVP to 770-537-5594 is required by May 3.

Candle Light Vigil

April is National Child Abuse Prevention month, dedicated to the many children who live with abuse and neglect every day. Join us as we come together for the Light of Hope candle-lighting ceremony to remember the plight of Haralson County’s abused, abandoned, and neglected children. Ceremony will be at 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 20, in front of the Haralson County courthouse on the square.
